The Challenges of Cyber Defence:

16 January 2023 · 2 min read

Cybercrime in France has risen significantly in recent years. Cyberattacks have affected many sectors, from individuals to businesses and public institutions.

In 2020, the French government reported a 30% increase in cyberattacks compared with the previous year. Ransomware was of particular concern, with numerous cases of ransoms demanded to unlock compromised IT systems.

A notable example is the 2015 attack on the French media group TV5 Monde, in which hackers took control of the group's social media accounts and television channels, broadcasting terrorist messages.

French businesses have also been targeted, as shown by the 2017 attack on the cosmetics group L'Oréal. The hackers managed to steal sensitive information about the company's finances and operations.

Public institutions have not been spared either, as shown by the 2018 attack on the Ministry of Defence, which exposed sensitive data on French weaponry and military operations.

To combat cybercrime, the French government has put reinforced security measures in place, notably by creating a national cybersecurity centre to protect the networks and IT systems of public institutions. Businesses and individuals are also encouraged to take security measures to protect their data and IT systems against cyberattacks.

In addition to the security measures introduced by the government, our country's judicial authorities have also taken action to combat cybercrime.

Criminal procedures have been strengthened to better meet the needs of the fight against this new form of crime.

Furthermore, the government has created a specialised unit to combat cyberattacks, which focuses on tracking down and arresting the individuals and groups responsible for these attacks.

Despite the efforts made to fight them, it is important to note that these attacks are becoming ever more sophisticated and can be difficult to detect and prevent.

Businesses and individuals must therefore be aware of the risks linked to cybersecurity and take steps to protect their data and IT systems.

Cyber Defence is as important as locking your front door!
