Hit by Ransomware? Most Likely KUIPER!

What is KUIPER?
The Kuiper ransomware is a sophisticated piece of malware, developed in Golang and compatible with Windows, Linux and OSX systems. Introduced on a Russian Dark Web forum, it has been identified as part of a ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) project. Kuiper was promoted by an actor going by the name of RobinHood, who offered their services for extorting a variety of targets and even provided operational help in return for a commission. It is the ransomware of the moment, the most active malware around!
The Kuiper ransomware uses a combination of RSA, ChaCha20 and AES encryption to encrypt files, with features such as deleting backup copies, stopping unwanted processes and services, and running commands to disable Windows Defender. It also includes anti-reverse-engineering and evasion techniques.
In addition, Kuiper is designed to spread autonomously within infected local networks, targeting other systems on the same subnet.
Kuiper follows a typical ransomware execution flow, divided into three main phases: configuration, encryption and clean-up.
During the configuration phase, Kuiper evaluates the command-line arguments and updates its configuration settings. It then disables the native Windows backups and launches a process that will terminate any task list, task manager, registry editor and hacker process that might be started during execution.
During the encryption phase, Kuiper generates random AES and ChaCha20 keys and initialisation vectors, before starting to encrypt files using either AES or ChaCha20 depending on the file extension and the settings. Finally, the clean-up phase includes actions designed to alert the system's users that it has been encrypted and to limit traces for forensic investigations.
How to get rid of KUIPER?
The Kuiper ransomware is a serious threat to data security. This article guides you through the steps to remove this ransomware from your system and recover your files.
Isolating the infected device: The first step is to isolate the infected computer to prevent the ransomware from spreading. Disconnect the computer from all networks. For more details on isolation, see PCrisk.
Identifying the ransomware infection: It is crucial to identify the type of ransomware. Use online services such as ID Ransomware to identify the Kuiper ransomware. Visit ID Ransomware.
Looking for a decryption tool: Look for a decryption tool specific to Kuiper. Platforms such as No More Ransom offer tools for various types of ransomware. Discover the tools available on No More Ransom.
Starting in Safe Mode with Networking: Restart your PC in Safe Mode with Networking. This lets the computer run in a secure mode while remaining connected to the internet.
Using an anti-malware tool: Once in Safe Mode, run anti-malware software to detect and remove the ransomware from your system. Make sure you use reliable software.
Removing the Kuiper ransomware requires caution and specific steps. Follow these instructions carefully to maximise your chances of recovering your data. For detailed guides on removing the Kuiper ransomware, see Malware Guide.
